Why a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist? Most pregnancies proceed without problems and result in the delivery of normal and healthy babies. However, some women (5-10%) experience difficulties and/or there are complications with the pregnancy which place the health and well-being of the mother or baby at risk. As defined by the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, a Maternal-Fetal medicine specialist is an obstetrician/gynecologist who has completed two to three years of additional formal education and clinical experience within the an American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) approved Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program. Members of the Society have advanced knowledge of the obstetrical, medical, genetic, and surgical complications of pregnancy and the effects on both the mother and fetus.
